Is Grammarly safe for kids? A parent's guide
Reviewed 2026-10-15 from public pages already cited in this directory. If a minimum age, an ad claim, or a data claim was not on those pages, this note says to check the app's terms.
Grammarly checks grammar and can rewrite sentences. The free plan exists. Pro is paid. Grammarly’s support note says Grammarly is now part of Superhuman.
Minimum age and account rules
The consumer terms say you may use Grammarly only if you are old enough to consent on your own — at least 13 under most U.S. law, 16 in the EU. This is not an under-13 product. A school can put younger students on Grammarly for Education under its own consent process. That is not the same as a parent downloading the consumer app for an elementary child.
Data and ads
Grammarly says it does not use personal information of people it knows are under 18 for targeted advertising. A fuller list of what a free account stores was not in the eligibility text we used. Check the app's terms.
Teaches or gives answers
Suggestions can teach a child to revise. Full-sentence rewrites can also replace the child’s writing. This directory marks it “mixed.” For a school essay, the rewrite is the problem.
Parent verdict
Reasonable for an older middle schooler, 13 or over, polishing a draft they wrote. Not for a 3rd grader, and not as a tool that writes the essay.
- Do not open a consumer account for a child under 13.
- If the assignment is the child’s writing, the draft has to start in their words. Use suggestions as edits, not as a replacement paragraph.
- Confirm the Pro price at checkout. The support article and the plans page did not present the same detail.
