Is Epic safe for kids? A parent's guide

Epic is a library of books, audiobooks, and videos for kids 12 and under. It is not an AI tutor. Teachers can unlock a weekday school library. Families can subscribe for home access.

Minimum age and account rules

Epic’s educator pages describe the library as for ages 12 and under. Age 12 does not cover all of 6th–8th grade. The App Store listing describes a 7-day trial and up to 4 child profiles. School-hours access exists only if the child’s teacher uses Epic. It is not a free account every family can open alone. A numbered rule for who must create the family login, beyond those child profiles, was not in the pages we used. Check the app's terms.

Data and ads

Epic’s school pages, including Epic School Plus, say the school products are COPPA and FERPA compliant. We did not review a separate family-plan privacy policy. Whether Epic shows ads was not in those pages. Check the app's terms for the family plan and for ads.

Teaches or gives answers

Kids read books, use read-to-me titles, and can take quizzes. Epic does not solve homework problems. This directory marks it “teaches.”

Parent verdict

A library, not a homework bot, for a child through about age 12. Know which product you have: school hours with a teacher, or a family subscription.

• Do not rely on free weekday access unless the teacher has set up a class. That window is 7am to 4pm local time.
• A 2015 help article with a family price is too old to use. A current dollar price was not on a page we are willing to treat as current. Check the app's terms, and the checkout screen.
• Check the app's terms for the family privacy policy before you add child profiles at home.
