Is Google Lens safe for kids? A parent's guide
Reviewed 2026-10-15 from public pages already cited in this directory. If a minimum age, an ad claim, or a data claim was not on those pages, this note says to check the app's terms.
Google Lens is what the old Socratic address now describes. socratic.org includes step-by-step homework help for math, history, chemistry, biology, physics, and more. Lens is a general Google product, not a kids’ tutor. Kindergarten through 2nd grade is not listed.
Minimum age and account rules
We did not find a numbered minimum age for Lens homework help. Check the app's terms. It is not a child-directed product. A parent who lets a child use a Google account should use Google’s own family controls. We did not re-review those controls here.
Data and ads
We did not find a COPPA notice written for homework help. What Lens stores from a homework photo, and whether that flow shows ads, was not in the pages we read. Check the app's terms.
Teaches or gives answers
Lens points at explainers, videos, and web results, and it offers step-by-step help. A 2026 Google Search post also describes a Lens flow that explains a photo of student work and coaches the next step. It can still be used to grab a solution. This directory marks it “mixed.” We did not test whether that newer flow is on a given phone.
Parent verdict
Useful when a parent wants a quick look at a problem with their child. Not a daily tutor for a young kid alone.
- Keep the phone in the parent’s hand for elementary homework.
- Check the app's terms, and Google’s family controls, before a child uses a Google account for this.
- The Lens page does not list a price. Whether a newer AI Mode requires a paid Google plan was not stated there.
