Is Duolingo ABC safe for kids? A parent's guide
Reviewed 2026-10-15 from public pages already cited in this directory. If a minimum age, an ad claim, or a data claim was not on those pages, this note says to check the app's terms.
Duolingo ABC teaches early reading through phonics, handwriting, sight words, and stories. It is a different app from the main Duolingo account, and it is not a generative chatbot.
Minimum age and account rules
Duolingo’s own listings do not agree. The ABC site does not pick one band. Google Play says preschool through 1st grade. The App Store says preschool through 2nd grade and also “Made for Ages 0–5.” Check the app's terms, and the store page you install from, before you treat one of those ranges as the rule. A parent sets it up with a nickname and an approximate age.
Data and ads
Duolingo’s privacy policy says ABC does not collect personal information from children. ABC privacy notes say speech for speaking exercises stays on the device and uses Apple’s speech recognition, and that the audio is not shared with Duolingo. The site, the Play listing, and the App Store listing say the app is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.
Teaches or gives answers
Lessons walk through letter sounds, decoding, and simple writing. It does not do a child’s homework for them. This directory marks it “teaches.”
Parent verdict
A strong fit for a child learning to read, with a parent doing the setup, if you can live with the grade-range disagreement.
- Set it up yourself. Use a nickname, not a full name.
- Do not assume it covers all of 2nd grade. Play stops at 1st; the App Store also says ages 0–5.
- This is not the main Duolingo language app. An account there is a different product.
